Dear Reader,
Sharing with you my Dragon Year Insights
Once, I held a naive belief, always seeing the best in others, until a few harsh lessons from people 'close' unfolded over the past two years. As you will be meeting these people over the next two weeks, my hope is for you to grasp this wisdom sooner:
胡适:"人性最大的恶,恨你有、笑你无,嫌你穷、怕你富"
This profound observation translates as, "The greatest malice in human nature lies in resenting others for their achievements, ridiculing them for their shortcomings, scorning their poverty, and fearing their affluence." It delves into the intricate and often opposing reactions we may harbor towards individuals based on their financial status. This insight sheds light on the jealousy and insecurity fueling our views and behaviors towards others, particularly concerning their assets.
In the forthcoming fortnight, we will encounter numerous individuals displaying such traits. Ironically, those we deem close—friends and relatives—are more inclined to begrudge our successes. Although powerless to hinder our progress, they resort to snide remarks, whether in our presence or absence, to bolster their self-esteem. It's crucial to remember that your diligence and the valuable connections you've forged are not to blame.
You'll also cross paths with those who believe themselves superior, eager to flaunt their wealth, be it through a flashy Ferrari or designer bags. While there's nothing wrong in cherishing fine possessions, nor should we resent others' prosperity, it's disheartening when they belittle your supposed deficiencies. Yet, what truly matters is adhering to your principles, and finding joy without the compulsion for material symbols of success.
Then, there are those 'good' friends and kin who exclude you from social gatherings, perhaps judging you unworthy or out of their circle. Let that motivate us to excel further, establishing our own distinguished sphere.
Encountering individuals during the Lunar New Year who seethe with envy over your accomplishments is inevitable. Consumed by jealousy, they might attempt to undermine your endeavors or slander you, unable to tolerate your advancement and feeling powerless, they seek to demolish your achievements. Beware of such toxicity.
Ultimately, my experience has taught me that detestation stems not from our actions, particularly when we've offered assistance, but from their personal predicaments. They require a scapegoat for their frustrations, and we, unfortunately, become their chosen target.
What's the wisest course of action during reunions and gatherings? Silence. Boasting about your successes only breeds resentment, leaving others to question why you merit such fortune. Similarly, concealing struggles is prudent; openly discussing them invites mockery, with only a select few willing to extend support.
Every New Year heralds a fresh start, a time for renewal, decluttering, and cherishing those genuinely significant in our lives. Choose your company wisely, rather than allowing others to make that choice for you.Wishing you a Happy New Year! May it bring prosperity and joy.
龙腾春来福满门,智慧喜乐随年轮。愿你龙年事业兴,智慧幸福伴君身
(As the dragon soars and spring arrives, blessings fill your home. With each passing year, may wisdom and joy abound. Wishing you a Dragon Year of flourishing endeavors, accompanied by wisdom and happiness.)
Best Regards,
Pamela Lim.

Dear Reader, I remember the day I collected my 'A' levels results. My teacher was disappointed that I did well enough to get into the university. Despite not being the most attentive student and facing significant challenges in a traditional classroom setting and reading a book remains a hurdle I have yet to overcome to this day. At a time when only 5% of the population advanced to university, I defied expectations and secured my place, not fitting the 'typical' profile of success but...
